Hipparchus is a large impact crater on the front of the moon , southeast of the Sinus Medii . It lies north of the Albategnius crater and northeast of Ptolemy . The crater is very heavily eroded and covered by numerous other impacts, especially on the western edge. Within the crater ring lies the Horrocks crater on the northeastern edge .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Greek astronomer Hipparchus .
