Hippi Perihan

Hippie Perihan , whose real name Perihan Yücel , ( 1952 - 1970 ) was the most prominent member of the hippie Association of in Sultanahmet in the late 1960s. She was considered the "hippie queen" of Istanbul. Perihan was from Izmir . Her father was a junk dealer or shoemaker, her mother came from Bergama . The parents weren't married. Perihan left his father's apartment in 1968 at the age of 16 and lived in a dump in Sultanahmet. She joined the local hippie community and was proclaimed "Hippiler Kraliçesi" ("Hippie Queen") by the community with a flower crown. The hippies were in the public eye because they were considered wicked because of their way of life. For example, on January 17, 1969, the daily newspaper Hürriyet had the headline “İstanbul Lekeleniyor” (Istanbul will be defiled).

Perihan Yücel died of an overdose in a hotel room in Sirkeci in early January 1970. A German citizen, her then and temporary lover, was found with her. Because he was initially suspected, he was arrested. Perihan's father publicly renounced her and told the press that he had disowned his daughter six [sic] years ago. It is true that one cannot be happy about death, but it is still good. You have been released from a microbe. The mother and the hippie community buried Perihan on Kozlu Mezarlığı. Texts from the Koran, the Bible, the Torah and by Khalil Gibran were read at her grave . The text of the tombstone read: "Hippiler Kraliçesi Perihan" (Hippie Queen Perihan).

Trivia

  • Shortly after Perihan's death, a local woman distributed Helva to the hippie community in Sultanahmet. Perihan's spirit made contact with her and offered her that.
  • In 1970 Fehmi Tengiz made a soft porn called "Hippi Perihan - Korkunç Arzular". Feri Cansel played the female lead in it.
  • Three years after Perihan's death, the Hürriyet reported that Perihan was not dead at all, but was living in Germany as a hostess.
  • Necip Fazıl Kısakürek addressed Hippi Perihan in one of his articles as an example of depravity and decay.
