SL2 was a British dance project from Loughton , Essex in the 1990s , which stylistically moved in the areas of acid house and hardcore .

Band history

In the late 1980s, SL2 started out as a trio that included DJs Slipmatt (aka Matt Nelson) and Lime (aka John Fernandez) as well as MC Jay J (aka Jason James). Like most young people at that time, the protagonists had grown up with hip-hop and were now involved in the burgeoning rave scene . The first success came in 1989 when Slipmatt's older brother, as a party organizer under the name "Raindance", initiated events across the country and hired SL2 as resident DJs. Slipmatt and Lime also co-founded the UK pirate networks Awesome FM and Raw FM.

A year later, the debut single Do That Dance appeared on B-Ware Records, which sold well, but the formation did not bring in any money due to the practice of the record label . The musicians then founded their own label, Awesome Records, and released the single DJ's Take Control , which initially sold 3500 copies. As a result, the XL Recordings label became aware of SL2 and the contract was signed. The now re-released track DJ's Take Control entered the UK charts in November 1991 and reached number 11.

The final breakthrough in the United Kingdom came in April 1992 when the single On a Ragga Tip climbed to number 2 on the English charts. Another, albeit smaller, single success in the same year was Way in My Brain / Drumbeats at number 26. Due to disagreements, SL2 split in 1993. A remix of the hit On a Ragga Tip placed 31st in the UK in 1997. The trance record Our Future was released in 2004 under the name Slipmatt & Lime .
