Robert Thomas junior (* around 1956 in Miami ) is an American jazz percussionist who drums directly with his hands.

Live and act

Thomas, who grew up on North Miami Beach, was encouraged to make music by his school teacher; since he had no instrument, he first drummed on the school desk. He sang in the choir at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church before joining the Broomfield Family as a percussionist at the age of 16 . After high school, he studied art at Dade Community College in Miami. He discovered jazz and was soon performing in local clubs with musicians such as Zoot Sims , Thad Jones and Mel Lewis . He went on tour with Monty Alexander and recorded the album Ivory & Steel . After performing with Jaco Pastorius , he became a member of Weather Report in 1980 ; until 1986 he played there. After the band broke up, he presented his own album, In the Dreamtime . Until 1994 he was active in The Zawinul Syndicate and other projects by Joe Zawinul .

He also performed with Jaco Pastorius ( Word of Mouth ), but also with Stan Getz , David Sanborn , Carlos Santana , Eddie Harris , Branford Marsalis , Herbie Mann , Ahmad Jamal and Jeff Tain Watts . In the field of world music he worked with Amit Chatterjee and the African musician Vinx. Together with Reuben Hoch he directs the Chassidic Jazz Project . With Felix and Julius Pastorius , Leroy Romans and Paxi Pastor, he founded the band 7th World . He can also be heard on albums by The Players , Ira Sullivan , Roberto Perera, Randy Bernsen , Othello Molineaux and Antoine Hervé .
