Hippolyte Fontaine (born April 12, 1833 in Dijon , † February 17, 1910 in Hyères ) was a French industrialist who supported the Belgian inventor Zénobe Gramme in the development of his DC motor . At the world exhibition in Vienna in 1873 , during the demonstration of the motor and a 2 km direct current line, he discovered by chance that the Gramme direct current motor can also be operated as a generator. Fontaine was responsible for the lighting at the International Electricity Exhibition in 1881, as well as at the World Exhibition in 1889 and the World Exhibition in 1900 . He died in Hyères on the Côte d'Azur in 1910 and is buried in the Montparnasse cemetery in Paris.

For his achievements he was honored as a knight in 1881 and as an officer of the Legion of Honor in 1889 .
