Hippopotamyrus is a genus of African freshwater fish from the family of Nilhechte (Mormyridae).

features

Hippopotamyrus species have a moderately high-backed body and are 8.5 to 30 centimeters long. The back profile is straight or slightly curved and never shows a hump. The muzzle is short and curved in profile. The mouth is subordinate or terminal. There are fewer than ten teeth in each jaw. The lower jaw looks swollen. The dorsal and anal fin are located far back and face each other symmetrically, whereby the attachment of the dorsal fin can also be a little further back than the beginning of the anal fin.
