Hira (Bible)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hira is a man from Adullam who is mentioned in two places in the Bible in Gen 38  EU .

According to the biblical report, Hira was friends with Judah , the fourth son of Jacob , Gen 38.12  EU . Hira came from the village of Adullam. Gerhard von Rad locates Adullam in the Canaanite plain. The place is mentioned again in Jos 15.44  EU . Gen 38: 1-2  EU reports that Judah went to Hira and saw the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua, whom he took as his wife. A few verses later, Hira is mentioned again ( Gen 38.12  EU ).

The resulting kinship between Judah and the Canaanites forms the background for the Tamar story in Gen 38.
