The Hirosaki University ( Jap. 弘前大学 , Hirosaki daigaku , abbreviated Hirodai ( 弘大 )) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is in Bunkyōchō, Hirosaki in Aomori Prefecture .

history

The university was founded in 1949 through the merger of the five state schools: The Hirosaki High School ( 弘 前 高等学校 , Hirosaki kōtō gakkō , founded in 1920), the Aomori Normal School ( 青森 師範学校 , Aomori shihan gakkō , founded 1876), the Aomori Normal School for Young People ( 青森 青年 師範学校 , Aomori his shihan gakkō in Noheji , founded in 1931), the Hirosaki Medical School ( 弘 前 医科大学 , Hirosaki ika daigaku , founded 1948) and the Aomori Medical School ( 青森 医学 専 門 学校 , Aomori igaku semmon gakkō , founded 1944).

Hirosaki High School ran from start to finish in Hirosaki, and most of what is now the Bunkyōchō campus was inherited from her (one of her famous sons was Dazai Osamu ). Aomori Normal School, Aomori Youth Normal School and Aomori Medical School were in the city of Aomori until 1945, but the school buildings were destroyed by the Pacific War in July of that year . The normal school and the medical school moved to Hirosaki; but the normal youth school moved to Noheji. The Medical School developed into the Hirosaki Medical School in 1948.

At first the university had three faculties: humanities and natural sciences, education and medicine. In 1955 she founded the Faculty of Agricultural Science, which was changed in 1997 to the Faculty of Agricultural and Life Sciences . In 1965 the faculty of humanities and natural sciences was divided into two faculties. In 1997 the Faculty of Natural Sciences developed into the Faculty of Natural and Engineering Sciences.
