The historical dye collection at the Technical University of Dresden contains more than 12,000 samples of technically produced dyes and color pigments registered in the international Color Index , more than 500 samples of natural dyes and more than 800 sample cards from leading European dye producers. For decades it served as a material depot for scientific and technical investigations into the application of dyes and color pigments in the textile and printing industry , the photographic industry and reproduction technology . In 1928 the dye collection at the Institute for Color and Textile Chemistry was founded by Walter König at the Technical University of Dresden .

As part of the collections and art holdings of the TU Dresden, the dye collection has predominantly a museum character. With its thematically arranged and designed display objects and subject areas, it illustrates the historical development of dye chemistry, especially in Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as its role in the development of large-scale chemical industry. With reference to current research activities at the TU Dresden, this collection of dyes is increasingly turning to modern fields of application of organic dyes, such as the development of organic light-emitting diodes and organic solar cells . It is professionally closely connected to the collection of devices and objects for scientific photography founded by Hermann Krone in 1907 at the TH Dresden ( Krone collection ) as well as the collection of color theory at the Faculty of Architecture of the TU Dresden.

The "historical dye collection" is looked after on a voluntary basis by Horst Hartmann and can be viewed by appointment.
