Collection of color theory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The color theory collection has been under construction as a teaching and research collection at the Technical University of Dresden since 2005 and is one of the latest collection initiatives of the TU . It sees itself as an instrument for science communication for the extensive multidisciplinary field of experience and knowledge of light and color . Originating from the interdisciplinary conference and publication series Dresdner Farbenforum at the Institute for Fundamentals of Design and Representation, it preserves the content and testimonies of personalities from science and art, whose lives and work are closely linked to Central Germany and the two hundred years of recent history of color theory .

Collection holdings

In addition to extensive bundles of study documents and didactic material on elementary and applied color theory at the Faculty of Architecture, the collection now also contains donations and permanent loans from various institutions and private individuals, mostly from the bequests of scientists, technicians, craftsmen, artists and educators. This includes historical models for the color order such as a double cone according to Wilhelm Ostwald or the original color body for the color card DIN 6164 by Manfred Richter . The initiator and founder of the forum, such as the Eckhard Bendin Collection , private lecturer in design at the Faculty of Architecture, contributed the basis of the current inventory through donations and permanent loans. Archival material on the life and work of the scientists Richard Ulbricht , Robert Luther , Paul Krais , August Klughardt and Manfred Richter who once worked in Dresden were brought together with valuable collection items from important color scientists working in Central Germany such as Paul Baumann, Otto Prase, Wilhelm Ostwald and Manfred Adam , the collection acquired a unique selling point in the 20th century with regard to the "representation of the Baumann-Prase and Ostwald successors".

Exhibition activity

The collection initiative also resulted in numerous exhibitions on the history of color theory. The exhibition project “color continuo 1810… 2010” on the occasion of 200 years of Goethe's theory of colors and Runge's writing “ Color Ball ” deserves special mention . Since 2011 the collection has had a studio in which temporary exhibitions on color theory are shown. After the opening exhibition with book presentation "On the theory of colors. Eckhard Bendin", two exhibitions followed in 2012 on the history of the origins and effects of the legendary Baumann Prase color card , which was developed by the painter and color systematist Otto Prase and in 1912 by the publisher and color card manufacturer Paul Baumann in Aue / Erzg . was issued. Further studio exhibitions: 2014 Color from Movement - On the History of the Color Spinning Top, 2015 From Color Theory to Color Teaching, 2016 Interface Color III - Testimonies from 10 Years of the Color Theory Collection.

Significance for research and teaching

The color theory collection is intensively supervised and scientifically developed. It is used extensively for research purposes and is part of science communication. An e-learning project incorporated the collection into teaching. After increased orientation and support for symposia and exhibitions, the collection was integrated in 2014 as an interface in the BMBF joint research project FARBAKS (color as actor and memory) and its use also in the interdisciplinary network 'Wissensforum Farbe-Licht' at the TU Dresden and partner of the ' Color learning laboratories expanded.
