Eckhard Walter Bendin (born May 10, 1941 in Neuruppin ) is a German architect , artist and private lecturer in design, who also worked as a color scientist, curator and editor.

Live and act

After completing a degree in architecture at the University of Architecture and Building in Weimar (diploma thesis 1968: Konzerthaus Leipzig), Bendin initially worked as an architect and sculptor in Erfurt and Weimar, after two years of candidacy and admission to the Association of Visual Artists / GDR (1970) From 1977 to 1983 he headed the office for architecture-related art in the Erfurt district .

In 1983 he followed a call to the Institute for Fundamentals of Design and Representation of the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Dresden and taught there as a private lecturer for design theory (color and shape theory, body and space composition, building sculpture and visual art) until his retirement in 2006. He also taught color design and design history at the Dresden Academy of Crafts.

At the Technical University of Dresden, Bendin initiated the interdisciplinary conference and publication series Dresdner Farbenforum in 1992 and the color theory collection in 2005 , which he built up and supervised on a voluntary basis until 2016. He laid the foundation stone through numerous contributions as a curator and author of exhibitions and publications on the processing of the history of color science in Central Germany in connection with the establishment of the new teaching and research collection as an interdisciplinary link to the historical inventory of the dye collection and the Hermann Krone collection to set up an interdisciplinary competence center for color and light at the TU Dresden.

After serving on the board and scientific advisory board of the Wilhelm Ostwald Society between 2005 and 2011 and on the board of trustees of the German Color Center since 2012, Bendin also worked as a partner in the BMBF joint research project on color as an actor and store FARBAKS from 2014 to 2017 .

In 2010 he summarized his scientific work in a three-part anthology on the theory of colors , a compendium of studies, models and texts, supplemented by teaching boards and colored instruments (prism, top and top discs). In addition to the analogy model of color (AMC) for lightness and hue differentiation, which was presented in 1991, the compendium contains studies and models for color perception and didactics, e.g. B. a new contrast classification, structural investigations for the conciseness of color phenomena as well as for aesthetic concepts. In 2014 he founded the edition bendin for contributions to color in science, education and design.

As an artist, Bendin was involved in industrial design in the 1960s and 1970s (molded concrete blocks and plastic products for the building industry). In Dresden he created building-related works and took part in art exhibitions. In particular through his later color artistic work, he is counted among the representatives of Concrete Art .
