Manfred Richter (born August 7, 1905 in Dresden , † April 20, 1990 in Berlin ) was a German color theorist and physicist.

Life

Born on August 7th, 1905 in Dresden, Manfred Richter studied technical physics at the Technical University of Dresden and obtained his doctorate in 1937 at the Institute for Photophysics there under the Ostwald student Robert Luther on Goethe's theory of colors . At the German Research Institute of the Textile Industry, he created a 'Bibliography of Color Theory' in the color research department.

In 1943 he was appointed to Berlin and worked at the Materials Testing Institute (MPA), today the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing . Manfred Richter set up the colorimetry department at the MPA. He was instrumental in founding the "German Color Committee" (1941). When the MPA resumed work in Berlin after the war, color standardization and colorimetry became an essential area of responsibility.

Since the workplace is in the (south) western Berlin district of Steglitz , his life was influenced. Manfred Richter developed the draft of the color system DIN 6164 and has been a leading member of the Color Standards Committee (FNF) since it was founded in 1949. As Dr.-Ing. habil. As an adjunct professor, he headed the Institute for Lighting Technology at the TU Berlin. He has been a leader in the "German Color Science Society" (DfwG) since it was founded in 1974. He was scientifically effective through the publication of the scientific journal "Die Farbe". With his work in the FNF, he managed all standardization work for DIN. The German standards were included in the European standard and also found their way into the ISO standards. The work in the international lighting commission is internationally important .

In 1990 Manfred Richter died as a result of a traffic accident. Internationally he was one of the most important representatives of color science of the 20th century.
