Then he worked in the paint factory Bayer & Co. in Elberfeld at Carl Duisberg , where he made some inventions in the field of dye production and application for him Patents have been granted.

In the winter semester of 1908/09 he returned to the TH Dresden as a private lecturer , where he became professor and holder of the chair for dye chemistry and dyeing technology from 1913. He was director of the Institute for Color and Textile Chemistry at the TH Dresden. In 1926 his institute received a newly built building, the so-called König-Bau from 1953, his 75th birthday .

Walter König continued the dye collection founded by Richard Möhlau at the TH Dresden in 1928 , which today includes more than 10,000 samples of technically produced dyes and color pigments registered in the international color index , an extensive collection of over 200 different natural dyes and more than 1000 Contains sample cards from leading European dye producers.

The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg made König an honorary doctorate in 1953 on his 75th birthday .

König earned merit through his research into polymethine dyes, which are used for the production of color and infrared film material.

From 1939, König lived in the Niederlößnitz district of Radebeul in what is now a listed rental villa (Rennerbergstraße 9) . König is buried in the Radebeul-West cemetery.
