The Historical State Hall for Schleswig-Holstein eV is dedicated to the cultural and state history of Schleswig-Holstein in pictorial evidence, in particular by promoting the state historical collection in the Schleswig-Holstein State Library in Kiel.

His goal is to rebuild a historical museum for Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel .

history

In 1897 the Kiel banker Wilhelm Ahlmann founded the association as the sponsor of the Historisches Landeshalle for Schleswig-Holstein, the first historical museum in the country. The basis was formed by the exhibits of the historical exhibition, which was shown as part of the large provincial exhibition in Kiel in 1896.

When the State Museum and Collection took over in 1935, the association was transformed into the Association for the Promotion of the Historical State Hall for Schleswig-Holstein, which in 1965 as a department of the Schleswig-Holstein State Library in Kiel was named State History Collection.

After the reconstruction of the Kiel Castle, the museum, which had been relocated during the war, was reopened in 1966 in the form of the permanent exhibition "North Elbingen - Pictures of the History of Schleswig-Holstein".

After the permanent exhibition was dismantled in 1981 and the state library and collection were moved to the Sartori & Berger warehouse in 2002, the constantly growing holdings are occasionally shown in thematic solo exhibitions.

Areas of activity

The historical state hall development association is recognized as a non-profit organization.

It is mainly dedicated to the preservation and expansion of the regional historical collection through new acquisitions of pictures and other visual evidence, through exhibitions together with the regional library, guided tours and participation in inventory and exhibition catalogs.

Its aim is the permanent presentation of the state historical collection as a historical museum for Schleswig-Holstein in a contemporary form.

The association also organizes annual excursions to sites of cultural and historical significance in the region, offers lectures on art and cultural history topics and promotes the collection through printed images.

Regional history collection

The regional history collection, which has grown since 1897, with pictorial evidence of regional history from the end of the Middle Ages to the present day, now has a stock of 40,000 objects - predominantly pictorial documents, including hundreds of oil paintings, but also artist bequests and more than 3,000 Schleswig-Holstein coins and medals.

The image documents - drawings, watercolors, prints, paintings, photographs, historical postcards - are divided into three collecting areas: portraits, event images, as well as views of places and landscapes.

The assignment to the Schleswig-Holstein State Library has the advantage that exhibitions from the State History Collection can be enriched with maps, manuscripts, books and magazines from other departments of the State Library.
