Historic cemetery Wandsbek

The historic cemetery Wandsbek is a no longer used cemetery at the Christ Church on the Wandsbek market square . It is used as a memorial and a park. The old Wandsbek cemetery , on the other hand, is located about 500 meters further north at Kirchhofstrasse 14 and was opened as a successor cemetery in 1850.

The former cemetery is located on the corner of Wandsbeker Marktstraße and Robert-Schuman-Brücke and covers 1000 square meters in the grave area. The entrance from the street Schumann Bridge is flanked by a bronze monument by Waldemar Otto , with which Matthias Claudius and his evening song (Matthias Claudius) is remembered. The central structure is the Schimmelmann mausoleum .

Emergence

The historic Wandsbek cemetery, now northeast of the church, was laid out around 1623 and used until 1850. Especially in the 19th century it was much larger. The shape and size of the cemetery had to be adapted to the changing location and size of the church, so that extensive reburial work took place several times. B. 1850, 1898 and 1955.

The grave of Matthias Claudius and his wife Rebekka is marked by two iron crosses. The royal Danish lieutenant general Friedrich Philipp Victor von Moltke (1768–1845) also rests here . A plaque and a memorial plaque commemorate the resistance fighter against National Socialism Helmuth James von Moltke . The tombstones in the cemetery are available online.

A memorial stone commemorating those killed in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 commemorates this time.
