location

The national park covers an area of 13,350 ha in the districts of Çanakkale and Ezine and stretches from the Aegean coast to the Dardanelles . In addition to the Hisarlık hill with the Troy Castle Hill, the park's area also includes numerous archaeologically significant sites such as Sigeion , Rhoiteion, Aianteion, Kumkale, Sivritepe and Beşiktepe . The Gelibolu Peninsula Historical National Park is located on the opposite European bank to the north .

history

As an archaeological area, the Troy excavation site has been under official protection since the first excavations by Heinrich Schliemann in 1869/1870 . When the German archaeologist Manfred Korfmann began new research in 1988, including in the area, the desire soon arose to protect the area over a large area in order to prevent the threatened destruction of the landscape through property speculation and agriculture. In his efforts to establish a national park, Korfmann was also supported by his Turkish colleagues Bozkurt Güvenç, Halet Çambel and Mehmet Özdoğan . When the military withdrew from the region following the collapse of the Soviet Union after 1990, the problem took on dramatic form. The dispute between archaeologists and speculators was closely watched, especially in the German press. On September 30, 1996, the area was finally declared a Historical National Park by decision of the Turkish Council of Ministers . In December 1998 Troy was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List .
