prehistory

Nameplate

At the turn of the century, Küb was a small, up-and-coming town on the Semmering Railway - a region that made a name for itself primarily because of its location as a climatic health resort and summer resort . Additional boost was given to the small town after Archduke Karl Ludwig , brother of Emperor Franz Joseph at the nearby Reichenau an der Rax the castle Wartholz build and settled there. Numerous servants of the court followed the emperor into the region and settled in the smaller neighboring towns (it was cheaper to live there than on the Semmering).

The future Empress Zita spent a lot of time with the Archdukes in Schoss Wartholz in Reichenau. A servant who was very familiar with her stayed at number 7 at Küb with the Lechner family. Over time it became too difficult for young Zita to communicate with her confidante via messengers, and she asked for a telephone line to Küb. The house owner - Alois Lechner - recognized the potential of the still young technology and made his house available for an exchange - so that other local residents could also use the telephony option.

The post office

Special feature: postal service envelope

It is not the oldest post office in Austria, but it is the only one that has been almost completely preserved despite numerous modernization attempts by the post office. Founded as a telephone exchange, a full-fledged post office was quickly created from house number 7. Initially it was run as a summer post office , but it began operating all year round in 1908.

In 1966 Ms. Anna Tscharnuter became head of the Küb post office. It shaped the post office for decades. As a result, she became known in Austria as the typical post lady, as her picture was often used in numerous postal advertisements as well as in other publications.

The modernization in 1987 hardly deserves its name. Careful repairs were carried out, but the appearance of the turn of the century was retained. One in Küb is particularly proud of the counter wall, which originally came from the abandoned Semmering post office . Other details that are true to the original are the telephone booth, the party desk and the original furnishings from the Semmering post office.

Since the post office was finally closed in 2004, the post office has only been run as a museum from May 1 to the end of October on weekends from Saturday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and since 2006 as a post office service. Postcards and postage stamps may be sold. The Küber Post Office has also received its own postmark, which, in combination with the in-house, personalized “Küber Post Stamp”, is very popular among philatelists.
