In 1975, Yazaki began studying film at the Nihon University Arts Faculty . In the same year he made his first short film, Uramado . Before making his first own feature film, he worked as an assistant to directors Shunichi Nagasaki and Sōgo Ishii . Yazaki made his full- length debut, Fuyu no hikari , on 8mm film in 1977 . His first 16mm film, Kazetachi no gogo, followed in 1980 . This black and white film , which was made with the participation of Shunichi Nagasaki, is based on a true story and tells the story of an unhappy lesbian love.

It was not until ten years after Kazetachi no gogo that Yazaki made the color film March comes like a lion , which premiered at the 1991 Berlinale . After another ten years, Yazaki reported back in 2000 with the three-hour Hana o tsumu shōjo to mushi o korosu shōjo , which is set in London and was filmed with English and Japanese actors.

Yazaki's other films appeared at shorter intervals: in 2006 he adapted the manga of the same name by Kiriko Nananan with Strawberry Shortcakes . In 2010, Sweet Little Lies followed , based on a novel by Kaori Ekuni . Furin jun'ai from 2011 is another literary adaptation , this time from a novel by Fuyuki Shindo . The following year, 1 + 1 = 11 , a film with the original script by Yazaki himself was released. Taiyō no suwaru basho , published in 2014, is again based on a novel, in this case by Mizuki Tsujimura . Yazaki's most recent films are the comedy XXX - Kiss Kiss Kiss from 2015 and Mubansō from 2016. The latter is set in 1969 and deals with the Japanese student unrest .
