March comes like a lion ( Japanese 三月 の ラ イ オ ン , Sangatsu no Raion [= Lion] ) is a Japanese film by the director Hitoshi Yazaki .

The title refers to the English idiom March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb , i.e. H. March begins cold and uncomfortable, but ends mild and pleasant.

action

Haruo loses his memory in an accident. He meets a woman who introduces herself to him as "ice" (Japanese ア イ ス , Aisu from the English "ice"). In reality, however, it is his sister Natsuko. The two enter into a love affair and move into a house that is about to be demolished. Haruo finds work at the company that is also in charge of demolishing his home.

March comes like a lion was premiered on February 20, 1991 at the Berlinale as part of the International Forum for Young Cinema. The Japanese theatrical release took place on June 10, 1992. On March 3, 1993, the film was shown for the first time on German television on West 3 . In English speaking countries it is known as March Comes in like a Lion known has nothing with the younger Manga 3-gatsu no Lion of Chika Umino to do its Anime -Adaption in Germany under the official title March Comes in like a Lion sold becomes.

The "Hitoshi Yazaki Group" acted as the production company of March comes like a lion . The low-budget film is the third feature film by the director Hitoshi Yazaki after his debut, the 8-mm film Fuyu no Hikari ( 冬 の 光 , "winter light") from 1977, and his first 16 mm film Afternoon Breeze (Jap. 風たちの午後 , Kazetachi no gogo ) from 1980. Later gained Yazaki greater awareness through films like Strawberry Shortcakes ( ストロベリーショートケイクス, Sutoroberī Shōtokeikusu ) from 2006, of the manga of the same name Kiriko Nananan adapted and with Kōen Okumura, Kiyomi Itō and Tarō Suwa part of the cast of March comes reunited like a lion .

criticism

In tip 9/91, Christoph Terhechte praises the film's “poetic and sensual images” and believes that he can recognize Yazaki's fascination with the “off the beaten track” of Tokyo with its noise and hectic pace. According to Terhechte, the incest motif was taken from Japanese mythology and transported to modern Tokyo.
