Otto Hjalmar Appelgren also Hjalmar Appelgreen or Hjalmar Appelgren-Kivalo (born April 5, 1853 in Hyrynsalmi , † July 26, 1936 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish archaeologist and curator of the State Historical Museum in Helsingfors.

Life

Appelgren was the first state archaeologist in Finland and has greatly influenced the development of archaeological research and museums in Finland by introducing and applying new methods. At his initiative, the museums cataloged their holdings and an improved standard of the excavation report was introduced.

His excavations in Turku around 1900 began scientific archaeological research in Finland. During his excavations, he attached great importance to preserving the findings.

Appelgren was a member of the Finnish Archeology Society and a corresponding member of the Society for the History and Archeology of the Baltic Provinces of Russia .
