The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi-Park (formerly Hluhluwe-Umfolozi-Park ), 280 km north of Durban , is one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries in Africa. It covers 960 km² of mostly hilly terrain and is located in the central Zululand in the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa . The park bears the name of the two rivers Hluhluwe and Mfolozi that flow through it.

The diverse vegetation offers a habitat for many mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. The " Big Five ", elephant , rhinoceros , buffalo , lion and leopard are represented in the park as well as cheetahs , wild dogs and giraffes and nyalas . Hluhluwe and Imfolozi were established as separate game reserves in 1895 when the population of these animals was threatened by excessive hunting.

At the beginning of the 1960s, the white rhinoceros ( Ceratotherium simium ) was threatened with extinction, and Imfolozi had the world's last known occurrence in the wild. In the Operation Rhino , by the KwaZulu Nature Conservation Service has been carried out, began to copies and sent them to reserves and zoos around the world, so in the meantime, global stocks have recovered. Today, similar efforts are being made with the black rhinoceros ( Diceros bicornis ). In 1999 a project was started to preserve the lion population that suffered from inbreeding, so that the population was supplemented by new animals.

In the course of time, the parks were assigned further areas, protective fences were erected in 1964 and in 1989 the two main areas were combined with the separating corridor to form today's park. Today, the nature conservation authority of the province of KwaZulu-Natal , Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, administers the protected area, which despite its size and significant wildlife does not have the status of a national park in South Africa.
