history

High Mountain Clinic Davos 1949

The history of the Hochgebirgsklinik Davos goes back to 1898, when Hermann and Olga Burchard founded the Association of German Health Centers in Davos . Just three years later, he opened the clinic for 80 tuberculosis patients. From 1919, recovery cures were offered to German children. In 1931 the German sanatorium was expanded to 200 beds.

The clinic's range of services was significantly expanded from the 1960s onwards, with the opening of the asthma and allergy clinic in 1964, followed by the opening of the eye department in 1970. Two years later, tuberculosis treatment was discontinued. From 1981 the offer was expanded to include a children's clinic, which was followed in 1987 by a clinic school and the mother-child station.

After the new clinic was built between 1990 and 1994, a year-round department for young people was inaugurated. In 1998, for the centenary of the Davos High Mountain Clinic Foundation , the parent-child department was opened. In 2003 the Davos Allergy Clinic - Center for Children and Adolescents - was added. Two years later, the Nederlands Astma Centrum Davos began operating at the Davos-Wolfgang location and the Valbella ward was opened following the closure of the Valbella Clinic.

The clinic filed for bankruptcy on September 9, 2013 and survival was in jeopardy for a period.

As part of a provisional debt restructuring moratorium, the clinic had until November 27, 2013 to develop a viable restructuring plan. The employee initiative received widespread support, in particular from the community of Davos and representatives of the Canton of Graubünden.

In May 2014, Klaus-Michael Kühne took over the properties of the Hochgebirgsklinik Davos through his Kühne Real Estate AG. This enabled the renovation of the Davos High Mountain Clinic to be successfully completed.

With the new owner of the property, the clinic can now concentrate on its core business. Together with the Swiss Institute for Allergy and Asthma Research (SIAF) and the Christine Kühne - Center for Allergy Research and Education (CK-CARE), an Allergy Campus is planned for 2017.
