The bannerman weaver ( Ploceus bannermani ) is a species of bird from the genus of the bunting weaver ( Ploceus ). The range of the bird is limited to the countries Cameroon and Nigeria . The IUCN assesses the population as endangered ( vulnerable ).
features
The Bannerman weaver reaches an average body length of about 13 to 14 centimeters. The top is olive green. The neck and the crown are golden yellow. The face and neck are black. The rest of the lower part shimmers in a light golden yellow. The bird has a black beak and black legs. There is no difference between males and females.
Habitat
The bird occurs at altitudes between 1100 and 2900 meters. There you can find it both at the edges of the forest and in the thicket of the forest. In the more open mountain regions he prefers scrub. If there are trees or shrubbery, it can sometimes also be seen in the cultivated landscape . The bird thus tolerates a certain amount of forest clearance or destruction of its natural habitat.
behavior
The birds occasionally appear in small groups, but they are usually seen in pairs. The breeding season lasts from November to January and varies regionally.
Subspecies
There are currently no known subspecies of Ploceus bannermani . The species is therefore considered to be monotypical . The species was named after David Armitage Bannerman .
distribution
The Bannerman weaver is native to western Cameroon in the Bamenda highlands and southern Nigeria. In Cameroon it is particularly common on the Oku massif , on the Tchabal Mbabo mountain and on the Adamaua highlands . In Nigeria it is mainly native to the Obudu and Mambilla plateau . Rare bird on the mountain was Manengouba and in Kodmin near the Bakossi Mountains observed.
