Norman Arthur Arlott (born November 15, 1947 in Reading , Berkshire ) is a British bird illustrator .

Life

After completing his training at the Storeham Boys School, Arlott completed a five-year engineering apprenticeship. His career as a professional bird artist began after meeting the bird photographer Eric Hosking , who enabled him to contact the Welsh ornithologist John George Williams . Williams was looking for an illustrator for an updated version of his 1963 book A Field Guide to the Birds of East and Central Africa , and after Arlott sent Williams a sample board, he was invited to Nairobi and hired. Arlott spent three months in Africa creating color illustrations of 600 species for Williams' A Field Guide to the Birds of East Africa , published in 1980. Arlott has been an illustrator for over 150 books and magazines, including thirteen of the 17 volumes of the Handbook of the Birds of the World .

During the 1980s he was engaged in various projects for the Natural History Museum in London, including a series of display boards depicting the various birds in a variety of coastal, mountain, forest and estuary landscapes. He has also designed over 20 commemorative editions of the Commonwealth featuring birds from the Bahamas , Jamaica , Seychelles , Christmas Island , Gambia , Malawi, and the British Virgin Islands , as well as creating images that have been reproduced on placemats and pottery. He was also the director of bird exploration tours in East Africa.

In 1980 and 1981, Arlott was named Bird Illustrator of the Year by British Birds magazine .

In 2001 Arlott discovered a specimen of a subspecies of the breast band ant pitta in the collection of the Natural History Museum , which was collected in 1878 but had not yet been described. Robert Prys-Jones and Paul Salaman described this taxon, which may now be extinct, as Grallaria milleri gilesi in 2009.
