life and work

Eric Hosking was born in London, where he lived his entire life. In 1929 he began his attempt to establish himself as a professional nature photographer, a very daring company at the time, since nature photography was still mostly done by wealthy lovers. Although he developed various new techniques in bird photography, success during the first years of his career was accordingly modest. His breakthrough came after national press reports of the attack by a tawny owl on Eric Hosking, which eventually resulted in the loss of his left eye. Hoskings most famous recording is Barn Owl with Prey ( Barn owl with prey ) of 1934. His 1970 biography published An Eye for a Bird ( An Eye for a bird ) is the most widely read his books. Eric Hosking has written and published a number of other books.

Eric Hosking has served as Chairman of the Nature Photographic Society , Vice President of the British Ornithologists' Union and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and Honorary Vice President of the Royal Photographic Society . He was awarded a gold medal by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in 1974 and was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1977 for his nature photography and environmental work.
