Guy Mountfort

Guy Reginald Mountfort OBE (born December 4, 1905 in London , England , † April 24, 2003 in Bournemouth , England) was an English advertiser , amateur ornithologist , conservationist and environmentalist .

Life

After leaving school at 16, Mountfort sold typewriters and then worked in advertising. During World War II he was a lieutenant colonel in the British Army . He then worked at Procter & Gamble and moved to the international advertising agency Mather & Crowther, where he was branch manager in London until his retirement in 1966.

An expert birders from childhood was Mountfort the co-author of The Birds of Europe - A Handbook for ornithologists and nature lovers of all in Europe living birds (1954), with illustrations by Roger Tory Peterson and distribution maps of Philip Hollom . In 1961 he founded the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) together with Victor Stolan , Sir Julian Huxley , Sir Peter Scott and Max Nicholson . For his services to ornithology, he was named Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1970.

In 1972 he led the campaign to save the Bengal tiger , persuading Indira Gandhi to designate nine tiger reserves in India , in addition to eight others in Nepal and Bangladesh . Guy Mountfort was the Vice President of WWF in the UK until his death.

He was married to Joan, nee Hartley Pink, since 1931, with whom he had two daughters.
