Eaton is also an accomplished photographer who managed to photograph some species of birds, such as the silver pigeon, shortly after they were rediscovered. He is a member of the Oriental Bird Club , to whose photo database he contributed over 2000 photographs. Recordings of him have also been published in the Handbook of the Birds of the World .

In 2007 Eaton and his business partner Robert Owen Hutchinson founded the ecotourism company Birdtour Asia Limited in Derby , where he works as tour guide and director. Eaton did fieldwork on over 70 islands in the Indonesian archipelago for over 13 years, culminating in the publication of 63 manuscripts and articles. In 2016 Lynx Edicions published the field guide Birds of the Indonesian Archipelago: Greater Sundas and Wallacea in collaboration with Bas van Balen , Nick W. Brickle and Frank E. Rheindt .

Eaton is a committed conservationist with a particular interest in ending the illegal bird trade in Asia by observing and monitoring bird markets.
