Bas van Balen
Sebastianus "Bas" van Balen (born November 17, 1954 in Arnhem ) is a Dutch ornithologist , bioacoustic specialist and leader of bird exploration tours , who mainly works in Indonesia .
Life
In 1974 van Balen graduated from Katholiek Gelders Lyceum in Arnhem. In September of the same year he began studying biology at the University of Utrecht . The two main subjects of his studies were general botany as well as landscape ecology and nature conservation , for which he spent from 1979 to 1981 in Bogor , Indonesia. In 1982 he obtained a Master of Science degree. In 1984 he traveled to Indonesia again to prepare for a long-term research project that would serve as the basis for his doctoral thesis.
Research work
From 1985 to 1998 van Balen lived in Indonesia, where he collected data on forest birds. From 1985 to 1987 he was visiting professor at the Agricultural University in Bogor with temporary transfers to the Indonesian Green Foundation (Yayasan Indonesia Hijau), to Universitas Pakuan, to the School for Environmental Management and to the University of Indonesia , where he worked with Soekarja Somadikarta . From 1989 to 1997 van Balen headed the conservation breeding program for the Balistar ( Leucopsar rothschildi ) of the International Council of Bird Preservation (today BirdLife International ) in the Bali Barat National Park . He has also been an advisor to the Indonesia programs of WWF , Wetlands International , the Center for International Forestry Research , PT Hatfindo and the Wildlife Conservation Society .
In 1999 he was at the Wageningen University with a dissertation Birds on fragmented islands persistence in the forests of Java and Bali , led by Cees M. Karssen for Ph.D. PhD.

Van Balen is co-author of the books The Importance of Segara Anakan for Nature Conservation: With Special Reference to Its Avifauna (1988, with Paul Erftemeijer and Edi Djuharsa), Burung-burung di Sumatera, Jawa, Bali dan Kalimantan: termasuk Sabah, Sarawak dan Brunei Darussalam (1999, with John MacKinnon and Karen Phillipps), Birds of Mimika: An introduction to the Lowland birds in the PT Freeport Indonesia Contract of Work Area, Mimika, Papua (2005, with Ani Mardiastuti and Yahya Husin), Subalpine and Alpine Fauna of Mimika, Papua, Indonesia (2006, with Darrell John Kitchener ) and Birds of the Indonesian Archipelago: Greater Sundas and Wallacea (2016, with James A. Eaton , Nick W. Brickle and Frank E. Rheindt ). In 2008 he wrote the family chapter on the white-eyes (Zosteropidae) in the thirteenth volume of the Handbook of the Birds of the World . He is also the editor of the Indonesian, English-language bird magazine Kukila . His most important contributions include the study Biology, Taxonomy and Conservation Status of the Short-tailed Green Magpie Cissa [t.] Thalassina from Java with Frank E. Rheindt and James A. Eaton, in the 2011 the taxonomic status of the Kinabaluelster ( Cissa jefferyi ) has been revised .
