The Hochrain is a desert in the area of the municipality of Gerstengrund in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

location

The hamlet was one kilometer southeast of Gerstengrund and 1.5 km west of Steinberg on the Kuhberg in the Thuringian Rhön. There are two more desert areas in the vicinity, Mückenhof and Kohlbachshof.

history

The settlement was first mentioned around 1515 and consisted of two sheep farms, which used the cleared meadows for alpine farming; The settlement was abandoned in 1912 in connection with an animal disease and the mining operations (lignite mining nearby). The reasons for the resettlement therefore differed from those of the other desertions in the vicinity of the former GDR border that were later forced to move. The areas are now managed as grassland and are located in the Kohlbach-Hochrain nature reserve within the Rhön biosphere reserve . There is no reference to the earlier settlement.
