Langeler Bogen flood protection basin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Langeler Bogen flood protection basin is a retention area between Niederkassel - Lülsdorf and Cologne - Porz - Langel . It serves to protect the city of Cologne from rising Rhine floods. The groundbreaking ceremony for the project was on March 21, 2007.

A second, two-kilometer-long dike behind the old dike creates a polder of 158 hectares . This is to be flooded via a southern inlet structure as soon as the Cologne level exceeds 10.90 m. The flood protection basin is then to absorb up to 4.5 million cubic meters of water in a controlled manner. Complete flooding will take a full day. This is enough to lower the flood in Cologne by 4.5 centimeters for so long.

The 2.6 km long old dike will be increased by 20 centimeters for the project. Due to the sloping ground, the new dike will be 1.5 m high in the south and 5.5 m in the north. In the north, a drainage structure is planned to drain the polder again. Outside of peak floods, the polder can be used for agriculture.

€ 16.8 million is earmarked for the cost of the project. Completion was planned for mid-2008. Another flood protection basin with a capacity of 29 million cubic meters is to follow in Worringen .
