Wedding meadow in Benthe , Hanover region , name board (2015)

The concept of using a wedding meadow goes back to the old custom that wedding couples plant a fruit tree. This tree then stood as a symbol of strength, strength and stability in marriage. Sometimes it is also intended to use the birth of a child as an opportunity to plant a fruit tree, then as a sign of stability and fertility.

This custom has been in recent times, especially since the turn of the millennium, but also before, e.g. B. in Bodelshausen in 1986, resumed by many cities and municipalities and communal green spaces, meadows and the like declared as official wedding meadows. According to this, trees, mostly fruit trees, can be planted there, usually on certain dates twice a year, by newlyweds or fiancés. Individual municipalities also allow a memorial plaque to be attached. One example is the Gallenkamp in Lübbecke .

The concept of the wedding meadow essentially pursues two purposes: on the one hand, the old custom is to be revived, so that married couples receive a lasting memory from the early days of their marriage; on the other hand, an urban green area becomes over time an urban and ecologically valuable orchard meadow converted without incurring any special costs for the city or local government.
