Hockey in Canada

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Canada, hockey is only played from spring to early autumn. An exception is the southwestern British Columbia , where field hockey is played all year round. Hockey is usually a girls' sport in schools, but there are leagues for adults for both genders. Currently between 10,000 and 15,000 members are organized in 350–400 hockey clubs.

The modern form of hockey was first played in British Columbia within Canada. In 1896 the first recorded game in Canada took place between girls from Vancouver . They then founded the Vancouver Ladies Club. At the turn of the century, men also played in Vancouver and Victoria and a Vancouver league was formed in 1902. The first women's organization was founded in 1927.

After World War II, immigration from all parts of the Commonwealth of Nations affected the spread of the sport across Canada. In 1959, hockey was also played in the Maritimes , Ontario, and Alberta. The Canadian (men's) hockey association was established in 1961; The women's association followed in 1962. In 1992 CFHA and CWFHA merged to form Field Hockey Canada .

The women's national team took part in international tournaments from 1956.
