Maritime provinces
Maritime Provinces (engl. Maritime provinces , Canadian Maritimes or simply the Maritimes ; French. Provinces maritimes ) refers to the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick , Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Iceland , lying at the southern section of the Canadian Atlantic coast.
In the south, the maritime provinces border on Maine in the USA, in the northwest on the Gaspésie Peninsula and in the northeast they are separated from Newfoundland by the Gulf of St. Lawrence . As a rule, Newfoundland and Labrador are not counted in the group of maritime provinces, but together with the three maritime provinces form the Atlantic provinces . In contrast to Newfoundland, Atlantic time ( UTC − 4 ) applies in the maritime provinces .
The maritime provinces, however, are less a geographical unit than a historical and cultural unit. The French called today's maritime provinces and part of New England the Acadia . However, the area has been controversial between the English and the French since its "discovery" by the Europeans. With the Peace of Paris in 1763 , today's maritime provinces finally came to England. The bilingualism of the provinces still testifies to this eventful history, although this is only official in New Brunswick, where a particularly large number of Acadians live. New Brunswick and Nova Scotia were among the founding provinces of the Canadian Federation in 1867, while Prince Edward Island did not join the state until 1873 (see History of Canada ).
population
The census in 2016 showed 1,813,606 residents together for the three Maritime Provinces. The population density is above average compared to the whole of Canada. In New Brunswick it is 10.5 inhabitants / km² and in Prince Edward Island it is 25.1 inhabitants / km².
