Hoedt
The Hoedt , also in the spelling Hödt, was a Dutch measure of volume. It was a measure of grain , lime and Kohlenmaß and was created especially for coal used. Regional variations were not uncommon. The name was derived from the shape of the measuring cylinder, which resembled a hat. The measure is also described in the literature under Hoed or Hoet.
Grain measure
In Rotterdam and Delft had the measure
- 1 Hoeedt = 10 ⅔ Zakken / Sack = ½ load = 53,653 Parisian cubic inches = 1063 1/6 liters which is about 10 ⅔ hectoliters
In Dordrecht the measure for dry goods was smaller and it applied
- 1 Hoest = 32 Scheepels
- 1 hoest = 49,040 Parisian cubic inches = 971 ¾ liters
Coal measure
The measure of coal was divided into
- 1 Hoest = 38 Maaten (Amsterdam) = 117,648 Parisian cubic inches = 2331 liters
- 1 Hoed = 38 Maaten = 56 Steek = 1170 liters
- 6 Hoed corresponded to 5 Chaldrons, old heaped in London
- 1 Hoed corresponded to 5/6 chaldrons when selling hard coal to New Castle
Lime measure
With the lime measure one calculated
- 1 Hoed = 8 tons = 64 Kinnetjes = 960 Kop = 971 liters
