Hope Church in Heidelberg

The Hoffnungskirche in Heidelberg is a Baptist church and was built in 1963. It has had its name since 1988. The community was initially looked after from Mannheim and became independent in 1968. The community also includes the branches in Allemühl , Mauer and Moosbrunn .

history

The community has its origins in the peacekeeping mission of the 1930s. A first mission car was in Heidelberg in 1936, but it did not get a great response. It was not until after the Second World War , when numerous Baptists had come to Heidelberg with the expellees and refugees, that the Mannheim Baptist Congregation led a church work in Heidelberg. From 1954, two full-time preachers worked in rented rooms. In 1963 a separate parish hall, today's Hope Church, was inaugurated, which was mainly financed by the large, long-standing parish in Mauer and donors from the USA. A plot of land on Philosophenweg was originally intended as the building site , but the community then swapped it for a building site in the southern part of Heidelberg . Soon afterwards, a third full-time preacher was hired and Heidelberg developed into the center of Baptist missionary work on Bergstrasse . In 1968 Heidelberg became an independent Baptist church, from which the partly older and more traditional churches in Allemühl, Mauer and Moosbrunn are also looked after. In 1988 the church was given its current name Hoffnungskirche . In 2001 the church was supplemented by a modern cubic extension with a glazed front facing Feuerbachstrasse.

description

The Hope Church is a rectangular building with a gable roof . The south gable facing Feuerbachstrasse is structured by a towering polygonal element, the entire height of which corresponds to the vertical light openings running through the tall window openings on the eaves side and illuminates the interior of the church. A large, simple cross is also emblazoned on the gable element. The gable, which is extended upwards, also hides a small roof turret . Inside, a gallery has been drawn in on the south gable side. In front of the altar there is a baptismal font sunk into the floor. The extension from 2001 was added to the eastern eaves side of the church and is a simple cubic structure with a flat roof and glass facade facing the street.
