The abbreviation goes back to the letters HO for trade organization (HO), F orum for the forum foreign trade company of the GDR , which u. a. who had issued forum checks as Intershop cash, as well as the Ka iser’s brand belonging to the West German supermarket chain Kaiser's Tengelmann .

Hofka existed from the beginning of the German-German currency, economic and social union . The Hofka brand was registered on July 6, 1990. In the early 1990s, the name HOFKA was characteristic of the re-designated HO stores in the GDR for a long time. Hofka, along with other joint ventures with East German trading companies (Schweriner consumer market, Cottka), was part of the Tengelmann Group's expansion strategy in the new federal states. As early as the end of the 1990/1991 financial year, these joint ventures belonged to the Tengelmann Group in terms of capital; the 330 former HO stores and department stores had been converted into Kaiser's or Plus outlets or closed. The stamp expired on January 8, 2003. The brand name HOFKA can therefore be considered historical. The trademark protection at the German Patent and Trademark Office has expired.
