High Reuth

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hohe Reuth is a 713 meter high wooded hill in the Fichtelgebirge southeast of the town of Gefrees in the district of Bayreuth (Northern Bavaria) with a former granite mining area.

history

In 1536, in the description of the office of Gefrees, the “tryb und hut” (= cattle drive and grazing rights) is called the “Hohenreut”, in 1832 the area is mentioned as “Raithberg”. 1839 is reported here from the "Reuth, the large high-altitude, bald Gefreeser Huth". As the name suggests, it was a cleared area on which the Gefreeser farmers were allowed to graze their cattle. It is not known when afforestation took place. The name Reut or Hohe Reuth has been preserved to this day.

Granite deposits

The Gefreeser Granit is porphyry granite and belongs to the mighty massif that was formed between Gefrees and Selb . The rock appears overall very light due to the grain size and shows a gray-bluish tint with a finer structure and was given the name “Gefreeser Granit” by geologists. You can still see four larger quarries that are filled with groundwater. They are interesting geotopes and biotopes.

Granite extraction / processing

From 1758 onwards, granite was initially mined "superficially". Granite rocks lying on the surface of the earth were worked on and then transported downhill to Gefrees on primitive paths in ox carts. There they were made into stairs, window frames and door frames.

natural reserve

The Middle Quarry on Reutberg is a landscape protection area because of its valuable geoscientific importance and was entered in the geotope register by the Bavarian State Office for Environmental Protection with the geotope number 472A006. The Reut quarry opens up the typical locality of the so-called "Reutgranite", which is a variety of the Variscan G1 granite. The area of the quarries is also an area of historical and economic cultural landscape elements to be preserved. It is also a natural idyll that is extremely worthy of protection, with rare flora and fauna (eagle owl, little owl, black stork).

Small monuments

On the hiking trail to the Reuthberg stands the “stone mason monument” created by Johann Heinrich Gareis, it wants to show the reverence for the old stone masons and their hard work. The inscription reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE OLD STONE CARVERS OF GEFREES 1885."
