history
Before the Second World War , there was a fallow area near the former Hohentor (1620 to 1825/1944) in the Neustadtswallanlagen, the former Bremen fortifications on the left side of the Weser, which for years served as a parking space for circus tents, carousels and rides and as a parade ground for the new town barracks .
The Hohentorspark was laid out in 1951/52 as the first larger green area after the war on this fallow land by the horticultural department of Bremen under the direction of horticultural director Erich Ahlers in the style of the time. The park with its central sunken garden and the large shrub beds was a meeting point, playground and leisure center for the population in what was then a very devastated area.
The parks fell into disrepair over time, the paths were dilapidated, the entrance areas overgrown. A fundamental renovation took place in 2012. Two historical sculptures from 1890, the reaper and the hop brewer , now came more visible to the entrance area. The wall of war rubble surrounding the sink garden was largely returned to its original state during the repair. The water-bound network of paths, accompanied by numerous flower beds and a water basin, is intended to emphasize the style reminiscent of a house garden.
Today the park surprises with its tranquility, despite the nearby elevated road.
