The Hokkaido pony ( Japanese 北海道 和 種 , Hokkaidō washu ), as a nickname also Dosanko ( 道 産 産 , dt. About: "Child born in Hokkaidō"), is next to the Kiso- , Noma- , Taishu , Misaki- , Tokara - , Miyako and Yonaguni pony one of the eight native Japanese horse breeds still in existence.

Background information on horse evaluation and breeding can be found under: Exterior , interior and horse breeding .

Exterior

The Hokkaido has a height of 132 to 137 cm. The profile of the mouth narrows towards the front, it is more Arabic. The trunk is compact, the ribs well rounded and the withers poorly developed. The front legs are a little weak. The muscles of the hindquarters are sufficient, if the tail is well set it is well angled. Like all Japanese breeds, the Hokkaido has good hooves, the bone substance of which is bluish. The round hoof shape and the good angulation are correct.

Breeding history

The island of Hokkaidō is in northern Japan . Since there is lush grass growing there, it is well suited for raising horses. Today, as then, the Hokkaidos are used there on small farms as draft and pack horses . Until recently, they were even used in coal mines. The Japanese cavalry some time ago was mounted on horses that had 50% or 25% Hokkaido blood in them. The influence of Arab blood can be seen in the Hokkaidos. In pure breeding you can rarely ride them comfortably.
