Breeding history
During the Second World War, stallions from abroad were crossed into the small ponies originally in Miyako in order to increase the size of the breed for agricultural work.
By 1944 there were around 10,000 Miyako ponies left. Due to the motorization of agriculture, it was later on the verge of extinction and is now bred on two islands, namely Miyako and Aguni. In 1977 there were 15 animals of the breed, in 1985 it reached a low with 8 individuals, after that their number increased to 25 in 1993, in 2001 only 19 animals of the breed existed.
