Holger Hitgen

Holger Hitgen (* 1966 ) is a German archaeologist from the Middle East .

Holger Hitgen studied classical archeology , ancient history as well as prehistory and early history at the universities of Hamburg , Naples and Munich . In 1993 he finished his studies with a master's degree and became a partner in an excavation company in Munich. In 1996 he became a research assistant at the Sanaa branch of the Orient Department of the German Archaeological Institute . There he took part in many excavations. In 1997/98 he led the excavations of the necropolis of the Awam Temple in Ma'rib , since 1998 on Jabal al-'Awd and in 2003 in Wadi Gufaina .

With Julia Thielebein, he developed a concept to turn local Yemenis into competent travel guides and to help the poor Marib region economically and in terms of tourism. He formed the scientific advisory board with Iris Gerlach and Ralf-Bernhard Wartke for the 2009/10 special exhibition AltSüdArabische Antiquertenschaften at the Vorderasiatisches Museum Berlin . In addition to field archeology of the historical period and questions of art history, Hitgen is primarily concerned with the contacts between southern Arabia and the Mediterranean region .
