development

Foundation and company history

Holiday Extras began in Great Britain . Here Gerry Pack founded the Apple Booking Company (ABC) in 1983 . He identified a vacancy rate in airport hotels while passengers had to stay overnight at the terminal. His idea: to bring the supply of the hotels together with the demand of the travelers and mediate between them. The Apple Booking Company bought rooms from hotels and brokered them to their customers either directly or through travel agencies. For their part, the travel agencies received commissions . The package also included the hotel parking lot and a shuttle service to the airport and back. From 1987 the company also brokered parking spaces near the airport, which are today's main business. ABC started selling online in the 1990s. In response to increasing competition in Great Britain, the company expanded the range of services. Self-operated parking spaces under the Airparks brand complemented the portfolio, as did short trips to theme parks or musicals. In 2007, the Holiday Extras Group, as ABC was now called, took over competitor BCP. By 2009, six million customers in the UK had used the offers and sales reached around £ 160m.

Opening up the European market

The steady growth also encouraged the shareholders to invest in the German market. In March 2003 ABC Holiday Plus GmbH became active in Germany. Martin Pundt managed the business of the British subsidiary and was responsible for the German market and neighboring countries. In 2005 the first own Airpark car park was opened at Düsseldorf Airport. By 2015, over 1.3 million customers had made use of additional services from the German branch of Holiday Extras. First, the Holiday Extras brand was registered in September 2009, and a Europe-wide uniform website followed four years later. At the beginning of 2015, Holiday Extras GmbH emerged from ABC Holiday Plus GmbH.

Private label Airparks

Under the Airparks brand, travelers can book parking spaces at 21 locations in Germany and abroad. A transfer brings you to the terminal and back. On the website, customers can book a parking space at the airport in advance. Most of the parking spaces are not located directly at the terminal, which is why customers are taken to the airport by shuttle. The market launch began on May 9, 2005. Airparks works with other partners. For example, customers can have their cars washed and examined during their vacation. Airparks is a member of BuF Germany (Federal Association of Independent Airport Parking Operators).

Further development and prospects

Holiday Extras achieved sales of 53.3 million euros in the 2018/19 financial year. Jerome Danglidis has been Managing Director of Holiday Extras GmbH since the end of 2015. His work focuses on European business and the development of new additional services. The rental of airport lounges has also started, to which air travelers have previously had difficulty accessing.
