The Holliwell Covered Bridge is a historic former covered road bridge in Madison County , in the US state of Iowa , in the United States . The bridge, which is now designed as a pedestrian bridge and is located about 6.5 kilometers southeast of Winterset , spans the Middle River .
The bridge, completed in 1880 with wooden cladding , has a span and length of 37.1 meters. The foundation is made of steel, the walls are made of wood and the roof is mainly made of metal. The construction consists of a lattice girder . It is the longest bridge of its kind in Madison County. The engineer was Benton Jones.
According to the National Register of Historic Places , the bridge had historical relevance from 1875 to 1899 and was renovated in 1995.
The Holliwell Covered Bridge was listed on August 28, 1976 by the National Register of Historic Places with the number 76000789 as a Historic Monument.
