The elder school is an educational concept for the natural design of schoolyards and playgrounds of day nurseries , kindergartens and other children's and youth facilities by the landscape gardener Heinrich Benjes . The aim is to familiarize children with plants in a natural atmosphere. The playing child itself is an important design element.

For this purpose, lectures, workshops and days of action are offered, but also site inspections, design concepts and implementation planning are part of the offer of the landscape planners working according to this concept . The project is supported by the state of Lower Saxony .

The idea of ​​child-friendly and natural design of school grounds was already formulated by Comenius in 1632 :
