Holy Magic Century (in Japan Eltale Monsters (エ ル テ イ ル モ ン ス タ ー ズ Eruteiru Monsutāzu), in the United States Quest 64 ) is a video game released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64 . Although the Nintendo 64 was released two years earlier, Holy Magic Century was the first role-playing game for this console .
history
Ayron, the hero of the game, is the son of Bartholomew, a ghost tamer who is looking for a stolen book. This book has the power to put a deadly spell on Celtland, the big island - more like a continent - on which the story takes place. The hero's job is to find both the book and his father.
His way there leads him through eight different cities:
- 1. Melrode
- 2. Dondoran
- 3. West Carmagh
- 4. Normoon
- 5. Larapool
- 6. Limelin
- 7. Greenoch
- 8. Brannoch
These are connected by caves, forests or otherwise.
Game mechanics
The game is turn-based when fighting, but otherwise in real time. In combat mode, an action must be chosen, which Ayron then takes. This can include the use of magic, melee attack with the staff, escape or use of an object. Some spells can be evaded by Ayron walking out of the line of fire or moving away from the target shortly after they have been cast. Many other spells always hit. During each turn, Ayron can move freely within a certain radius. If the battlefield is left, Ayron will flee. It then stops at this point and the monsters disappear. After winning a fight, Ayron looks in the same direction as before. The interaction with other characters is limited to simple conversations, saving and receiving items. It can only be stored in guest houses, but a Memory Pak is required for this.
Character development
Ayron has several character traits that can be improved. These are hit points ( hit points ), magic points (magic points, spell points), defense (defense), agility (agility, mobility) and attack (attack power). In addition, the hero has four magic classes, the so-called elements (elements), which he can expand. Depending on the expansion, Ayron receives different spells, such as the healing spell when he expands the water element. The elements can also be combined, but not with the opposite element. Water and fire as well as air and earth are incompatible with one another.
Magic points and hit points represent, as is usual in role-playing games, how often the hero does magic and how much damage he can withstand. The defense reduces the damage taken, while the agility allows you to avoid attacks entirely. The attack ability increases the damage Ayron can inflict on opponents from attacks with his only weapon, the staff. Elements represent the magic level, which can be a maximum of 50 per element. As the level of magic increases, Ayron gains new spells and the old ones that use the corresponding element become stronger.
Similar to The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, the various properties are expanded through their use. Hit points and defense are increased by dealing damage to Ayron, and hit points are increased by using the staff. Magic points increase through the use of magic. Agility increases when Ayron runs or dodges attacks that hit him. The Level increases if the hero a Spirit will (mind) or its magic experience is 100 percent. You can freely choose which element is increased.
There are no items of equipment, but items that roughly double defense and are consumed when used. In the cities you can get items for free if you don't own at least one copy. Items can also be found in treasure chests. There is no trading system.
