The Holy Trinity Church or Église Anglaise (German English Church ) is an Anglican church in the city of Geneva . It is located on Rue du Mont-Blanc between the Cornavin train station and the large hotels on Lake Geneva . Services are held in English . It belongs to the Archdeaconry Switzerland in the Diocese in Europe of the Church of England .

history

The first English services took place in 1555 in the reformed church of L'Auditoire (former Notre-Dame-la-Neuve chapel). According to the Anglican rite , they were held for the first time in 1685 in Geneva by Rev. Gilbert Burnet . From 1814 the chapel of the hospital on the Place du Bourg-de-Four served as a meeting place for the community. With the advent of tourism in the 19th century, the desire of English guests to have their own church grew.

The construction of the Holy Trinity Church was decided in 1846. Charles Sumner , Bishop of Winchester , was present at the laying of the foundation stone in 1851. Two years later he was able to consecrate the church on August 30th. In 1884 Mrs. Jephson donated the east window. In 1910 the community adopted a new constitution. Other stained glass windows were designed by Jacques Wasem from 1958 to 1981. A community hall was built in 1966. Renovations took place in 1976 and from 1983 to 1985. A new organ was also installed in the latter . Further work on the tower clock and organ was carried out in 2015.

The 150th anniversary of the church was celebrated in 2003/04. The exhibition "The Welcoming City: English-Speaking Protestants from 1555 to the present day" in the Geneva State Archives paid tribute to the history of the Church and that of English-speaking Protestants in Geneva since 1555.
