The wooden bridge Anzenwil , also called Neckerbrücke Anzenwil , is a wooden road bridge in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen . The bridge spans the Necker between the communities of Ganterschwil and Mogelsberg . The wooden bridge was replaced by a new building in 2000 and has only been used by pedestrians since then. The bridge is listed. The bridge is 46 meters long and has a roadway width of 3.50 meters. Vehicles with a total weight of up to 14 tons could drive over the bridge. The bridge is located on the Neckertal cultural route.

history

In 1778 the Stuckes family was forced by a court order to build and operate a footbridge over the Necker. The family operated a mill 100 meters downstream from the current bridge location. The jetty should be suitable for winter and on which one could walk, ride and line. The jetty should also be accessible with a sledge in winter. The family then built the required footbridge on their mill property. In 1831 the footbridge was destroyed by floods and had to be rebuilt by the family. In 1860 the jetty had become almost unusable. It was in massive danger of collapsing and only the brave could still commit it.

The Ganterschwil - Neckertal road project was created in the early 1860s. For this, a new bridge had to be built for the footbridge. The architect of the bridge was Karl Reichlin (1822–1897) from the Canton of Schwyz . The bridge was built in 1863 by the builder Eberle from Flawil . It was a "Lattice Truss" construction that had been developed in the USA. The construction costs amounted to 8,800 francs.

But the construction turned out to be too weak. The bridge sagged dangerously and had to be reinforced by a central pillar in 1872. In 1895 the canton of St. Gallen increased the load-bearing capacity of the bridge by installing trusses . In 1924 the central pillar was replaced by a concrete base.

The bridge was owned by the municipality of Ganterschwil until 1895; today it is owned by the canton of St. Gallen.

The bridge served general traffic until 2000. The bridge was replaced by a new reinforcing steel bridge. The bridge is considered to be the largest Town'sche truss bridge in Switzerland.
