prehistory

Inside view with the bridge

A ferry connection between Wettingen and Neuenhof is documented for the first time in 1274 at this point. In 1764, the abbot of Wettingen Abbey commissioned the Teufen builder Hans Ulrich Grubenmann to build a bridge over the Limmat. The first project envisaged a span of 119 meters, but only the second project with a length of 61 meters was realized in 1765. This covered and boarded bridge was built with a toothed and screwed arch, which consisted of six beams on top of each other. The roadway and the roof were supported by an arch bolted with pincer posts. This construction was subsequently reinforced with cross members. This first bridge was destroyed by French troops after the first battle of Zurich in 1799 . The emergency bridge built afterwards fell victim to a flood in 1800. In the years that followed, they made do with a ferry until today's bridge could be built.

Today's wooden bridge

The bridge was probably built by Blasius Balteschwiler in 1818 . The name of the builder has not been passed down; However, since the construction of the bridge corresponds to the Baden bridge built by Balteschwiler, the same builder can be assumed. The bridge was built in the usual construction of covered wooden bridges with hanging and trussing . It has a length of 38 meters, a height of 7 meters above the water and from there a height of 3.8 meters, a width of 5.2 meters and a span of 36.71 meters. The bridge is covered with a hipped roof and is complemented by an iron bridge over the factory canal. Because the cross members were too weak, they were reinforced in 1922. Motorized traffic used the bridge a little upstream until the high bridge was built in 1970. The bridge has been a listed building since 1971 and has since been owned by the communities of Wettingen and Neuenhof.
