Blasius Balteschwiler (born February 1, 1752 in Indlekofen near Waldshut , † March 21, 1832 in Sulz AG , also called Blasius Baldischwiler ) was a carpenter and master builder . He specialized in the construction of bridges and founded a sawmill company that still exists today .

biography

Balteschwiler settled in Laufenburg in 1775 , acquired citizenship three years later and worked there as a foreman. In 1791 he signed a contract with the city of Laufenburg and took over the sawmill in Sulz as an inheritance . The contract conditions included the new construction of the sawmill at their own expense and the sawing of the boards of the Laufenburg citizens at preferential prices. After the Fricktal had come to the newly founded canton of Aargau in 1803 and the obligation to tithe was lifted, he bought the sawmill.

Balteschwiler first appeared as a master builder in 1777 when the church in Wehr was being built . But he was best known for building bridges. He repaired the Säckingen wooden bridge in 1778, 1785 and 1810 . When the French occupied the Fricktal in 1796, they destroyed several bridges over the Upper Rhine , whereupon Balteschwiler built emergency bridges . He erected his first new building, the wooden bridge over the Aare in Olten , in 1803. The Olten city authorities were very satisfied with his work, so in 1805 they entrusted him with the construction of the new St. Martin church . Balteschwiler built several other bridges: 1806 the Rhine bridge Rheinau-Altenburg , 1807 the Rhine bridge Rheinfelden , 1810 the Baden wooden bridge and the Laufen bridge in Laufenburg, 1818 the wooden bridge Wettingen-Neuenhof and 1823 the Rhine bridge Kaiserstuhl-Hohentengen .

The sawmill founded by Balteschwiler in Sulz in 1791 still exists today. From this the Balteschwiler AG developed, which has over 100 employees and is one of the largest timber trading companies in Switzerland.
