The Holzhafen Geestemünde was a port in Geestemünde , now part of Bremerhaven . Today it is an ornamental pond.

history

The Holzhafen, built from 1875 to 1877 according to plans by Theodor Hoebel , had an area of 36,000 m² and a depth of 1.20 meters. It was connected to the existing ports in Geestemünde via a branch canal. The small port was used for rafting and for temporary storage of wood. A siding led to the north side, which branched off from the branch line to Bremerhaven behind the Holzhafen Canal. After the customs union in 1888, wood processing companies increasingly settled here. In 1882 the first gymnasium was built for the GTV at the Holzhafen.

Around 1900 arose around the Holzhafen u. a. on Leher Chaussee (today Rheinstraße ) and Leherstraße (today Bismarckstraße ) more houses and companies were pushed back.

In 1934 a major fire at the Chr. Külken timber company destroyed large parts of the facilities at the Holzhafen. The function of a timber port has now been given up. In 1937 the harbor basin was reduced by 2/3 of its area. In 1944, bombing raids destroyed many homes in the area.

2018: Holzhafen without water

Around 1983 it was converted into an ornamental pond with surrounding larger green areas for local recreation. In 2018, renovation work took place at the Holzhafen. The emptied basin was desludged and then the bank edge was redesigned.

A street in the north and west of the basin is called Am Holzhafen . It leads from Rheinstrasse to Bismarckstrasse.

The sculpture Mother and Child by Fritz Becker has stood on the north side of the Holzhafen since 1969 as a foundation by Kurt Ditzen .
